The New Fork River is a major tributary of Wyoming’s Green River, and less than 30 minutes from Jemas Ranch. More intimate and peaceful than the Green and Snake, this river’s waters are pristine and packed with Brown and Rainbow trout.
Your float down the river will be scenic, with lush grasses, sagebrush and prickly pear cactus lining the banks. It flows for about 70 miles through private and public land, all within Sublette County, Wyoming. Moose, deer, porcupines, fox, bear and rabbits are just a few of the animals you may see catching shade under a cottonwood or willow tree.
During your day fly fishing on the New Fork River, look out for the historic New Fork River Crossing Park, an area that marked the halfway point for pioneers seeking their fortunes out west. Notably, it was the first federally funded and planned road (trail) from the East to the West. Created as a shortcut branch of The Oregon Trail, it circumvented the rough mountainous terrain and saved a week of travel time. However, emigrants arriving in the wrong season found perilous high waters that were just as dangerous and tipped many a wagon. Incredibly, the landscape here looks much the same as it did in the 1860s!
This section of trail became known as the Lander Trail and eventually became a part The California Trail, which it still is today.
